The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a dramatic film directed in 2007 by Julian Schnabel, from a screenplay by Ronald Harwood. Jean-Dominique Bauby, editor-in-chief of the French magazine Elle, suffers a massive embolism. He came out of the coma three weeks later and is discovered to be a victim of the "captivity syndrome". He is totally paralyzed, unable to move, eat, talk, or breathe without assistance. He can only communicate with the outside by blinking his left eye. Forced to adapt to this unique perspective, Bauby creates a new world from the two things over which he retains control: his imagination and his memory.
