It is the first in the Sinbad trilogy produced by Columbia and conceptualized and animated by Ray Harryhausen with a special stop-motion animation technique called Dynamation. Two sequels were made: The Great Voyage of Sinbad released in 1974 and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger released in 1977.

In 2008, the film was selected by the National Film Registry for preservation in the United States Library of Congress for its "cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance . " 3
