Shortly before five o'clock on Monday morning and in less than 15 minutes, thieves assaulted the Green Vault, the treasure chamber of the Royal Palace of Dresden, in the historic centre of the Saxon capital. According to early research, two people took three sets of 18th century diamonds from Europe's most valuable royal collection. The loot amounts to millions of euros and researchers suspect that the thieves will sell the jewelry on the black market. The police version claims that the thieves managed to access the compound through a window, after forcing the bars that protected it. Shortly before the robbery there was a fire in the catacombs of a historic building near the Green Vault, which left the streets of the area without electricity.
