For many of the painters of the avant-garde, Cézanne would be the father of modernity. Picasso wrote: "Cézanne was my only and only teacher, do not think I was limited to looking at his paintings ... I spent years studying them ... Cézanne was like a father to all of us". Paul Cézanne was born on January 19, 1839 in Aix-en-Provence, the first-born of a family engaged in the manufacture and export of hats that later became interested in financial business.
