New York, 1955. Harry Angel, un détective privé, trouve enfin un client en la personne du très énigmatique Louis Cyphre. Celui-ci le charge de retrouver un certain Johnny Favorite, un chanteur qu'il a sous contrat et dont il est sans nouvelles après un retour de guerre dont il a émergé gravement choqué, défiguré et amnésique.
